Your checkbook, balanced.
No bank login required.

A simple register for your accounts, bills and spending. Everything stays on your own device, and it works like an app once it's on your home screen.

Takes about 30 seconds. No account, no sign-up.

Get it on your home screen

Balance or Bust is a web app, so there's nothing to download. Add it to your phone or tablet and it opens full-screen, just like an app.

iPhone & iPad

1

Open app.balanceorbust.com in Safari. This only works in Safari, not Chrome or another browser.

2

Tap the Share icon in the toolbar (the square with an arrow pointing up).

3

Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then confirm.

Works in Safari on iPhone & iPad

Android

1

Open app.balanceorbust.com in Chrome.

2

Tap the menu icon (the three dots in the top corner).

3

Tap Add to Home screen (or Install app), then confirm.

Works in Chrome on Android. Samsung Internet has the same option in its menu.

Heads up: your data lives only on the device you use, so it doesn't sync between devices. A phone and a tablet will each have their own separate register. You can move your data between devices with the backup feature.

A native iOS app is planned for a future release.

Take a look around

Six things you'll use every week. Jump to any of them.

Register

Log it. Tick it off when it clears.

Every deposit and purchase goes in your register. Keep entries pending until they clear your bank, and your balance and pending balance always tell the truth.

  • Swipe an entry right to post it, or left to delete it
  • Search and filter by description, category, amount or date, including anything in a note
  • Add a note to any entry to remember what it was for
  • Start fresh after payday: clear posted entries, keep pending ones, and your balance carries forward
  • Tap the eye to hide your balances when someone's looking
  • Income and expenses for the month sit right up top
  • Returned something? Log it as a refund and it lowers your spending instead of counting as income
  • Credit card accounts say Purchase and Payment instead of Expense and Income
Bills

Know what's due before it's due.

Add a bill once and it rolls forward to its next due date every time you pay it.

  • Recurring bills, autopay flags and past-due warnings
  • Pull a bill all the way right to pay it and pick which account it comes out of, or a short way to skip it
  • Your balance and pending balance stay in view while you pay
  • Choose a window, from 3 days to 3 months, and see only the bills due in it
  • Nothing due this month? Skip it, or tick several bills and skip them together. It moves to its next due date, with an Undo, and the row notes what you skipped
  • Utility that changes every month? Enter this month's amount and choose whether it's just this bill or every one after
  • Import or export your bills as a CSV
Calendar

Your month, at a glance.

Every day with activity gets a marker, and every bill shows up on its due date, so busy weeks stand out before they surprise you.

  • Bills appear on their due dates, including in future months
  • Tap a day to see what's due, and pay it right from there
  • See exactly what came in and went out on any day
Stats

See where your money actually goes.

Spending by category, budgets that speak up when you're over, and trends over time.

  • Just your stats, with nothing else in the way
  • Set monthly budgets per category and get flagged when you go over
  • A category breakdown with percentages
  • Spending over time, by day, week or month
Calculators

Know what you owe, and what you can afford.

Four planners are built right in, so you don't have to leave the app to do the math.

  • Keep every loan and credit card in one list, with your total debt and debt-free date
  • Compare avalanche and snowball to see which clears them sooner and for less interest
  • Can I afford it? Check a purchase against your balance and upcoming bills
  • A savings goal planner, and a tip calculator that splits the bill
Private by design

Your data stays on your device.

Everything lives in your own browser. There's no bank login, no account, and nothing is uploaded to a server.

  • Back up everything to a single file from the app's menu
  • Restore as new accounts, or replace everything
  • Switching phones? Restore your backup and pick up where you left off

Questions, answered

Does my data sync between my phone and other devices?

No. Everything is saved on the device and browser you use, so a phone and a tablet each keep their own separate register. That's also what keeps it private, since nothing is uploaded. If you want the same data somewhere else, back it up from the app's menu and restore it on the other device.

Does it connect to my bank?

No. There's no bank login, no linked accounts and no account numbers anywhere in the app. You enter what you want to track, so you're always in control of what's in your register.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your accounts, entries and bills stay on your own device and are never sent to a server. There's no account to create and nothing to sign in to.

How do I move to a new phone, or protect my data?

Open the app's menu and choose Backup & restore. It saves everything, including accounts, entries, bills and custom categories, to a single file. On the new device, restore that file. Back up regularly, because clearing your browser data or removing the home-screen icon can erase what's on the device.

How do I start fresh after payday?

On the Register tab, tap Clear posted transactions (it asks you to tap twice). Every posted entry is removed, your pending entries stay, and your posted balance carries forward as the new starting balance, so your numbers don't change. An Undo button appears right after, in case you tapped by mistake.

A credit card has nothing due this month. How do I keep it on my bills list?

Skip it. Open the bill's payment screen and tap Skip this month, or on the Bills tab swipe the bill a short way to the right. To skip several at once, tick them and tap Skip selected. The bill moves to its next due date, nothing gets logged in your register, and the bill notes what you skipped. A skip shows an Undo button right after, in case you tapped by mistake.

My utility bill is different every month. Can I change the amount just once?

Yes. Edit the bill and change the amount. The app asks whether to use the new amount for future bills too. Choose Just this one and the bill goes back to its old amount, such as $0, as soon as you pay or skip it. Choose Yes, future bills to keep the new amount going forward. Until then the bill's row says it's for this bill only.

What does the “Bills due within” setting do?

It sets how far ahead you're looking, from 3 days to 3 months. The Bills tab shows only the bills due in that window, plus anything past due so a missed bill never hides. A total beside it adds them up. Tap Show all bills to see the full list.

Can I pay a bill from the calendar?

Yes. Bills appear on the calendar on their due dates, and future months show repeating bills too. Tap a day to see what's due, then tap Pay to open the same payment screen you'd get on the Bills tab.

Can I hide my balances?

Yes. Tap the eye in the corner of the balance box to hide the figures, and tap it again to bring them back. It's remembered on that device, which is handy when the app is on your home screen and someone's nearby.

Can I track more than one loan or credit card?

Yes. On the Calculators tab, open Debts and add as many loans and credit cards as you like. It totals what you owe, shows when you'll be debt-free at the payments you entered, and compares paying off the highest-rate debt first (avalanche) with the smallest balance first (snowball). Credit card dates are estimates: they assume the same payment every month and no new charges. It's separate from your Bills list and saved on your device with the rest of your data.

How do I record a refund or a credit?

Choose Refund instead of Income when you add an entry. The money goes into your balance, but it reduces your expenses and the spending in that category, so a $40 return on a $100 purchase shows as $60 spent. It won't inflate your income.

Can I add a note to an entry?

Yes. The add and edit screen has a Notes field, left blank unless you use it. A note shows under the entry in your register, and searching finds entries by their notes too.

Can I track a credit card?

Yes. Add it as an account and tick "This is a credit card". The wording switches to Purchase and Payment, and refunds work the same way. To see what a card costs you in interest, add it under Calculators, then Debts.

Does it work on Android as well as iPhone?

Yes. On iPhone or iPad, add it from Safari. On Android, add it from Chrome. The steps are in the install section above.

Is it free?

It's free while in beta. A native iOS app is planned for a future release.
